Hike Half Dome
Musings about hiking Yosemite's signature landmark, Half Dome.
Entry for May 8, 2008 - Tioga Road Plowing
photo
For those of you trying to get to the Valley from the Nevada side via Hwy 120…here’s a plowing update. Tioga Road opening operations are continuing and the workers are moving eastward. So far they have cleared about 45 miles heading east from the Crane Flat gate. Specifically, through to the west end of the Dana Meadow Avalanche Zone. Average snow depth is 5 Feet. With any luck it’ll all be cleared by Memorial Day. But no promises. You should be OK for an early June Half Dome hike.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Well if you ever plan to motor west, take my highway, that's the highway that's the best. Get your kicks on Route 66." - Nat King Cole,

Sonora Pass (SR 108) has been opened today. So this really means that there is a good chance Tioga Pass will follow soon.

Wow, Sonke, are you on top of things. I just read in the Sonora paper this evening that Sonora was opened yesterday. Ebbetts is supposed to be open by Memorial Day weekend and Tioga should be about the same time or not too far behind.

authorized employees with current avalanche training certification and fully equipped per "Tioga Pass Road Opening and

Opening day is getting closer. Latest news from today's YNP Daily Report:

Tioga Road Update:
Beginning today, Friday, May 16, Administrative Access will be permitted on the Tioga Road. This access is for the
purpose of accomplishing work essential to park operations including preparation of facilities for seasonal operations.
There are no active avalanche zones. The road at Olmstead Point remains a "no stopping" zone and travel is currently
reduced to one lane.
The road remains opened from Crane Flat to Yosemite Creek for public access.
Bicycle use is now permitted all of the way from Crane Flat to Tioga Pass. Drivers should expect bicyclists throughout the
corridor. Use Caution.
All traffic on the Tioga Road needs to use extreme caution as a variety of maintenance functions are continuing in the
corridor including hazard tree work and ongoing road work.
